Inspired by the love relationship between novelists Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf, Philadelphia’s Vita and the Woolf released their long-awaited new album, Tunnels on June 16 on Believe Global Label Services. The project was mixed by James Chapman (of Maps ) and has received widespread critical acclaim, among others finding a fan in M83 who wrote about them for USA Today  as well as being dubbed a “Band You Need To See” by Billboard. Mike Mains is a Detroit-based musician who loves rock and roll. Performing more than 300 shows in the last three years, Mains has built a committed fan base. His shows are high-energy, interactive, and exciting. Last year, wanting to spice things up a little, he played his first “Living Room Tour.” This 35-date North American tour brought him into the homes and backyards of fans to perform his music in a new context, offering a unique, intimate view into his songs. Berklee In The Round: Live from Cafe 939, Tuesday, Oct 10 at 7:00 pm on birnCORE

Berklee in the Round (BITR) occurs on the second Tuesday of every month. Each month, a different faculty member selects four to five students and hosts a concert. If possible, they also will choose one special guest (such as a visiting artist or touring songwriter). The event, based on the in-the-round performances at the famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee, seats songwriters in a circle, where they take turns playing songs. The audience is seated around the performers, lending an intimate feel.

Tonight’s BITR features Claire Bryant, Sammy Hakim, Brian Walker, Mitchell Proctor, and Malte Willms.

Ten years ago, Kentucky native Ben Sollee came to prominence by singing a Sam Cooke song while playing the cello. The NPR sensation was not some backwoods novelty. Sollee’s spare, exultant interpretation of “A Change is Gonna Come” announced the arrival of a relentlessly curious musical soul. In the decade following, Sollee recorded a slew of albums and EPs in a daunting variety of settings. He has played with trance bluesman Otis Taylor, banjo virtuosos Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck, and has collaborated with Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Ben Ottewell is a singer-songwriter from Chesterfield, England, and former member of the band Gomez.

“It was going to be called Bones That Catch the Light,” Ottewell said of his third solo album, “but when I mentioned that to friends they either sniggered like Beavis and Butthead or thought it was too wordy.” In the end, the Derbyshire-raised singer-songwriter opted for A Man Apart, a title with a pleasing ambiguity. Adam Torres, Aisha Burns & Aura Pineda: Live from the Red Room, Friday, Aug 11, at 8:00 pm on birnCORE

Adam Torres is a folk singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas. In 2006 at age 20, Torres released his debut album Nostra Nova, featuring 11 idiosyncratic and varied songs. With breathtaking moments throughout, it feels full of promise and simultaneously weathered and young. A self-release, Nostra Nova established long-lasting roots in the small Athens, Ohio, community where he lived at the time, but didn’t resonate farther until much later.
