Tribute to Sal Cuevas Live from the Red Room
October 4, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT
Tune into birnCORE on Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. for a tribute show to Latin Bass player Sal Cuevas, with special guest Rubén Rodríguez live from the Red Room at Cafe 939.
Sal Cuevas was an American Latin Bass player who was a previous member of the salsa music group Fania All-Stars for many years. Sal had worked with many well-known pop, jazz, salsa, and rock artists over the span of his career. Some include Willie Colón, Rubén Blades, The Black Eyed Peas, and Usher.
Representing Sal’s music and history, Rubén Rodríguez will be performing music from Ray Barretto’s Rican/Struction. Rodríguez is originally from New York and has been recognized as one of the most hard-working latin bass players in the United States. He has worked with artists like Grover Washington Jr., Roberta Flack, Eddie Palmieri, and The Fania All Stars.
Previously taught by Victor Venegas, Rodríguez was heavily influenced by his teacher. He started studying with Victor in 1979, and during that time he was listening to players like Gua Gua and Sal Cuevas. Another great influence of Rubén’s was Bobby Rodriguez, admiring the melodic playing Bobby demonstrated, where as many other players at the time were playing more rhythmically.
Rubén currently resides in The Bronx, and is working full-time as a recording and live musician. Rubén has recently been seen working with artists such as Sergio George and Marc Anthony. He is working to finish up Marc Anthony’s new album this summer in Miami.
