Tom Speight, Tommy Ashby and Cheekie play Cafe 939
October 17, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT

Tune in to birnCORE on Thursday, October 17 at 8:00 p.m. for a live broadcast from the Red Room @ Cafe 939 featuring indie folk artist Tom Speight and singer-songwriters Tommy Ashby and Cheekie perform from the Red Room stage.
Tom Speight’s re-emergence into the folk music scene is bolder than ever. Battling physical illness and personal matters for years, the relentless artist channeled his grief into vulnerable yet fearless lyrics. This collection of songs was brought together in the release of his long-awaited debut album Collide last April. Collide details Speight’s time in recovery and reflections on a lost relationship, sung over ambient guitar strums and melancholy melodies reminiscent of legendary folk artists such as Leonard Cohen, Bon Iver, and Damien Rice.
Now having played 80 shows across Europe in the span of twelve months and reaching over 12 million streams on Spotify, Speight’s years of self-motivated practice is driving him to success, as he showcases a unique depth that is pulling in a widespread audience.
Scotland born folk songwriter Tommy Ashby has an artistic background like no other. Spending his early twenties studying for a PhD in the perception of sound, Ashby used his technical understandings to further enhance his Scottish roots, Americana, and blues influenced music. His recent EP Golden Arrow produced by Sam Okell (John Grant, Graham Coxon) contrasts his earlier works while still keeping an intimate quality.
Cheekie (Tyler Maez) is a Boston based singer-songwriter fusing folk influences with a modern, alternative sound, along with hints of R&B and dream pop. He just recently released his self-titled EP Cheekie which includes his soundcloud-famous song “Disparu”.
