Mogli and Josin Live from the Red Room
May 9, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT
Tune in to birnCORE on Thursday, May 9 at 8:00 p.m. for a broadcast of the live performance by singer-songwriter Mogli from the Red Room at Cafe 939.
Mogli is a German singer-songwriter who gained recognition in 2017 with the Netflix release of her film Expedition Happiness, a documentary where she and her ex-boyfriend traveled North America in a bus they turned into a tiny home. The film featured her intimate soundtrack Wanderer. While the film sold more than 150,000 tickets and Wanderer cracked the top 40 in Europe, Mogli went through an unexpected period of upheaval and transition.
She then recorded her EP Patience, which came out in March, where she let her own creative vulnerability flow through her into her music. Instead of exploring her surroundings, she entered the studio to find her narrative, seeking introspection instead of the outside world. With inspirations such as Bon Iver, Lorde, and Ben Howard, the EP’s five melancholic pop tracks feature a hazy melody and pulsating synth that has been compared to the sound of 90’s-era Cranberries. “Patience is kind of about telling me that everyone sometimes needs a break – which was hard because I just really love to work and I love life and living,” said Mogli.
Already working on her second album, Mogli plans on continuing her growth as an artist and as a person.
JOSIN is an alternative/ indie artist from Cologne, Germany, to a Korean mother and German father—both of whom are opera singers. Josin grew up in a household with music at its center. Her 2017 EP, Epilogue, was a soaring, moving introduction: a strikingly original fusion of neo-classical textures and inquisitive electronics. In the Blank Space, an album released in January 2019, takes this conversation further with its broad but stunningly concise exposition of supple strings, textured vocals, and digital excursions.
