Erin’s Prime Slices of the Week (3/4-3/11)

Current Joys – A Different Age // lo-fi rock

“A Different Age” is the type of album you want to listen to from start to finish after a really long week. Nicholas Rattigan, the sole songwriter behind Current Joys, cuts deep with his lyrics and heart-wrenching vocal delivery. The songs are simple and lo-fi – mostly just vocals, guitar, light synths, and a simple drum pattern – but that kind of seems to be the point. Songs like “No Words” have a strong meditative vibe, while the title track “A Different Age” tells an emotional story about being an artist in todays world. Be sure to check out each track’s corresponding video, as this is a visual album (link for “A Different Age” below).

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats – “You Worry Me” [SINGLE] // alternative folk soul

Rateliff has more soul in his pinky then most people have in their entire body. Although his vocals alone will hook you, the magic of Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats is in each players contribution and impressive synchronization with the rest of the band. While it may be simple, and at times repetitive lyrically, there are so many moving parts to the arrangement of “You Worry Me”. Each horn and guitar adds a layer and warmth to the track and the single as a whole feels overwhelmingly full. If you haven’t seen these guys live, I seriously recommend it – they’ll be on tour starting this month!

Soccer Mommy – Clean // indie rock

Clean is her first professionally produced album. At just twenty years old, Allison sings of love and the classic themes that go along with the teenage experience. Her style is fairly straight forward indie rock with catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics anyone can connect with. Although Allison’s vocals are stunning and contribute a lot to the album, I love that she included instrumental versions of each track because it really lets the simple, but mesmerizing guitar lines shine through and become the main focus for a while. Give them all a listen!
