Amber Mark– Conexão (R&B)

Conexão does what an EP is supposed to do. It hooked me right from the start, delivered four excellently catchy and groovy tracks, and left me wanting more. The production is simple and sparse, letting Amber Mark’s catchy and powerful vocals shine and highlighting the ingenious songwriting. This EP is about to introduce Amber Mark to the spotlight.

Erin’s Prime Slices of the Week (4/23-4/29): Haley Heynderickx, Donovan Woods

Haley Heynderickx – I Need to Start a Garden // indie folk

I Need to Start a Garden feels like a private acoustic set performed in someones living room. The guitar picking is beautiful in its simplicity, accompanied with minimal percussion and soft,thoughtfully quaint lyrics. Each track is reminiscent of the last and an allusion to the next. You can read Haley;s facial expressions through her deliberate, yet organic inflections. My favorite track is probably #2; The Bug Collector, with lyrics like “theres a praying mantis prancing on your bathtub/and you swear its a priest from a past life out to get you”.

Curtis’ Prime Slices Of The Week (4/24 – 4/29): Postdata, Hana Vu

This week was sadly a bit of a drag. On Tuesday, out of 20 artists, I added 2 songs. All of these artists submitting full albums by the way. Needless to say it was a slow one. Today however I did a big review on Traveller’s debut album “Western Movies,” which was definitely a prime slice, but I won’t include it here. I do however have two singles I’d like to share.

Postdata – Evil [Single] (Indie Rock)

Curtis’ Prime Slices Of The Week (4/17 – 4/22): Tancred, Lawn

Tancred – Night Stand (Pop Rock)

Disclaimer: this album hasn’t actually come out yet, but two singles have! The album comes out on June 1st and I’m very excited to listen to it. The first single (“Queen of New York”) is a catchy song about falling in love with someone whom you admire more than anyone else. The second (“Reviews”) to me is a song about trying to follow your own path as an artist without letting the public make you think the music you want to make is unworthy. Curtis’ Prime Slices of The Week (4/10-4/15): Leyya, Dude York

Leyya – Sauna (Trip-Hop)

Leyya is an Austrian duo comprised of Sophie Lindinger (synthesizer, vocals) & Marco Kleebauer (synthesizer, guitar). This album is definitely one of a kind for me in the sense that I’m not a big fan of electronic music and I love this album. The thing though is that it’s more than the genre suggests. The Instrumentation is extremely well thought out and it sounds rich. The record consists of a nice mix of songs to dance to and songs to relax to. Erin’s Prime Slices of the Week (4/1-4/8): Polish Club, French Kiwi Juice

Polish Club – Beeping/Able // rock&roll soul punk

With only two members, Polish Club takes up an enormous amount of space with this latest two-track release. Novak’s vocals are energetic to say the least – his performance of the song can almost be heard in the recording of “Beeping”. The duo, John Henry and Novak, seem to spend a lot of time on dynamics in order to keep the songs full and interesting. It can be hard to sound complete with only drums and guitar, but Polish Club has truly mastered their sound and are clearly strong enough musicians to carry that classic, soul-infused rock sound. Its loud and intense, but its played from the heart in a way thats hard to ignore.

Erin’s Prime Slices of the Week (3/25-4/1): Thirdstory, Demo Taped, Frankie Cosmos

Thirdstory – Cold Heart // soulful pop

The harmonies on Cold Heart are flawless and should be incentive enough to give this album a listen (specifically check out “On and On” to get a glimpse of the perfection). Thirdstory consists of three members from NYC; Ben Lusher, Richard Saunders, and Elliot Skinner. Since gaining a substantial following on YouTube, and then releasing their first EP, Searching, in 2017, Thirdstory was able to show their live performance chops with Chance the Rapper on his 2017 tour. With the release of this debut LP, the trio will soon begin their own tour all over the country. Cold Heart is polished, but wildly organic, overflowing with soulful vocals and smooth bass lines. Give it a listen and don’t let these guys slip from your memory – they’re only just beginning.

Erin’s Prime Slices of the Week (3/11-3/18): Gundelach, Meernaa

Gundelach – Baltus // electro pop

Baltus is Gundelach’s very first full length album, and I hope it wont be his last. Although it is easy to hear the 80s synth-pop influences, Gundelach’s sound can also be comparable to more modern artists like James Blake or Sylvan Esso. The lyrics hit hard, with lines like “you don’t know how it feels to be alone” in Control (track 4) echoing among distant synthesizers and a steady, yet intricate beat. This line seems to mirror the theme that runs throughout the entire album; loneliness. Gundelach’s vocals are silky smooth on top of his simple arrangements, and blend with ease together with ARY on tracks 6 and 8. Tracy Thorn– Record (Pop)

Tracy Thorn’s third solo album post Everything But The Girl revels in 80s pop and disco nostalgia in a natural and genuine way that seems left out of a lot of current 80s revival. Erin’s Prime Slices of the Week (3/4-3/11)

Current Joys – A Different Age // lo-fi rock

“A Different Age” is the type of album you want to listen to from start to finish after a really long week. Nicholas Rattigan, the sole songwriter behind Current Joys, cuts deep with his lyrics and heart-wrenching vocal delivery. The songs are simple and lo-fi – mostly just vocals, guitar, light synths, and a simple drum pattern – but that kind of seems to be the point. Songs like “No Words” have a strong meditative vibe, while the title track “A Different Age” tells an emotional story about being an artist in todays world.
