Born in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Basia Galaj entered the world of music at a very young age. Taking an interest in piano at the age of six, she began taking private lessons and continued her classical piano studies in Missio Musica after moving to Warsaw. Not long after this, she began studying voice. She moved to the US in 2011. By her senior year of high school, she became dually enrolled as a student of the California Baptist University, performing with the University choir and continuing her piano and vocal studies. The songs on Oscar Acevedo’s latest album, A Toda Costa, were inspired by his personal experiences as a Berklee graduate, musician and teacher at Universidad de los Andes, in his native Colombia.
“Our intention, with this repertoire,” he explains, “was to return to the fusion sound characteristic of the 1980’s.” A key instrument needed to achieve this sound, is the electric guitar. Acevedo recorded the album under Continue reading “Oscar Acevedo: Live from the Red Room @ Cafe 939, Friday, Oct 27 at 8:00pm on birnCORE”

Recorded on March 2nd, 2016, The Marcus King Band Live at Rockwood Music Hall showcases the raw energy that the band’s audiences expect and embrace. This 4 song EP is South Carolina soul and blues at its best. Marcus King leads his band with such charisma, that it’s like taking a step back in time, and experiencing a classic 70s rock concert with the familiar sounds of CCR, Otis Redding, James Brown and even Jimi Hendrix. My favorite track has to be “Wade In The Water,” a minute-long song featuring Marcus’ vocals, a cappella. To me, that track constitutes a bare-boned testament to the creativity and musicality of this group, through their main man. Be on the look out for this group coming to a town near you.

Tyler Childers sounds like the mountains. He has the musical sensibility of the lonesome, echoing, Eastern Kentucky hillsides, where he grew up, and a voice steeped in the grit of dirt roads. He embodies the stories he tells, from the top of his red head, down to his boots. It’s exhilarating to witness an artist, fully and genuinely living his truth, and doing it so beautifully. Inspired by the love relationship between novelists Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf, Philadelphia’s Vita and the Woolf released their long-awaited new album, Tunnels on June 16 on Believe Global Label Services. The project was mixed by James Chapman (of Maps ) and has received widespread critical acclaim, among others finding a fan in M83 who wrote about them for USA Today as well as being dubbed a “Band You Need To See” by Billboard. A dynamic and cerebral collection of soulful pop, the album touches on power dynamics in relationships and society as well as sexual discovery and empowerment.
